Both halves are growing. Cheshire West and Chester had 357,200 residents at the 2021 census, up 8.4% on 2011, and its council is regenerating town centres from the Chester Northgate scheme to Northwich and Winsford. Cheshire East had 398,800 residents, up 7.7%, with a strong financial technology cluster and early plans, approved in May 2026, to reshape Crewe town centre. HS2's planned route to Crewe was cancelled in 2023 and its land powers lapsed in February 2026, though the government has said it wants a new railway between Birmingham and Manchester, and Cheshire East Council is pressing for Crewe to be part of it.

West Cheshire and North East Wales are closely linked, with a busy travel-to-work corridor running between Deeside, Chester and Merseyside. Councils on both sides of the border work together through the Mersey Dee Alliance, which covers Cheshire West and Chester, Wirral, Flintshire and Wrexham, an area its partner councils put at around £22 billion a year in economic output.
